Letter From the Editor

I’ve always been fascinated by style.  I suppose that’s because style is one of the rare things in life that is both uniquely personal and, yet, at the same time, completely public.  Whether consciously or subconsciously, our personal style is not only an expression of our perceptions of ourselves, but it also communicates our values about notions like culture, tradition and social etiquette. Style is timeless, yet ever-evolving; and as we grow, as individuals, hopefully, so does our taste.

Each November, Wiles is proud to publish our annual “Style Issue.”  It’s one of our most exciting issues of the year and the 2013 Style Issue is guaranteed to please!

In our biggest and most exciting “Fashion & Beauty” section of the year, we’ll share some of our favorite looks from LA Fashion Week. This year’s “Fashion Week at Your Fingertips” includes complete coverage of Style Week, LA Fashion Weekend and the inaugural installment of Men’s Fashion Week.  And we’re overjoyed to feature Dubai-based phenom Furne One in our Designer Spotlight.

In “What He Wants,” relationships guru Marc Alexander will ask and answer the question “Does style matter?” as he explains how men interpret women’s outward appearances.

As we head into the holiday season, our features on “The Truth About Black Friday” and Essential Tips for a Stress-Free Holiday Season” will no doubt prove wonderful guidelines for how to make and enjoy the most of the next two months.

In this month’s cover story, we’re extremely excited to feature the very stylish, introspective and transparent star of film and television LisaRaye McCoy.  In our candid interview, we discussed her transformation from “first lady” to “single lady” and her secret to remaining true to herself under the oftentimes harsh glare of the spotlight.

When putting style into perspective, I think songstress and style icon Whitney Houston may have said it best.  When asked what she loved about being a woman, she simply replied “I like being a woman, even in a man’s world. After all, men can’t wear dresses, but we can wear the pants.”

On the surface, of course, style is all about fashion and glamour. But, a closer look reveals a deeper, more meaningful truth: style is power, because style is all about choice.  So, no matter what you may have hanging in your closet, embrace your power and choose to be thoroughly and distinctively you. Because when you put your best you forward, the world can’t help but take notice.
