McQueen’s Legacy Rides On

Steve McQueen’s Porsche 930 Turbo to Be Auctioned

at 2015 Monterey Car Show

Proceeds to Benefit The Boys Republic

In 1946, a troubled 16 year-old wandered onto the grounds of The Boys Republic in Chino Hills, CA.  The leaders of the organization whose motto “NOTHING WITHOUT LABOR” has been ringing true since 1907 didn’t know they had a future superstar in their midst and, more than likely, neither did the 16 year-old Steve McQueen.  But the teen who grew into becoming respected by men and adored by women, went on to leave his mark as one of Hollywood’s most enduring and admired actors of all time.

Yet, despite his celebrity status, he never forgot his humble roots. He routinely visited Boys Republic and became notorious for demanding large quantities of items like jeans and razors from Hollywood movie sets that he would turn around and donate to Boys Republic.

Boys Republic is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian school and treatment community for troubled youngsters.  The organization seeks to give adolescent youth with behavioral, educational, and emotional difficulties an opportunity to achieve their maximum potential for responsible, self-directed life within the community.

35 years after his untimely death at age 50, the Hollywood icon continues to give back to the place he credited for helping to save and turn around his life. Begun in 2008, the annual “Friends of Steve McQueen Car Show” brings automobile, motorcycle and off-road vehicle enthusiasts together and has, to date, raised more than $750,000 to support the mission of Boys Republic.

To say that Steve McQueen was a car enthusiast is like saying the sun is hot. Known to possess an enviable collection that included a Ferrari 275GTB, a Jaguar XKSS and a Hudson Wasp, one of the last cars he owned – a 1976 custom Porsche Turbo 930 – will sell at Mecum Auctions during Monterey Car Week this summer.  The proceeds of the auction will be donated to Boys Republic.
