WORLD VIEW: END SEXUAL VIOLENCE

CAMPAIGN TO STOP RAPE LAUNCHES PHOTO EXHIBIT

AT GLOBAL SUMMIT

The International Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict today launched the multimedia exhibit Beauty in the Middle: Women of Speak Out at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict.

A few hours before the launch, British Foreign Affairs Minister William Hague and actress Angelina Jolie—who together are co-hosting the summit—visited the exhibit and spoke to some of the Congolese women featured in the photos.

Beauty in the Middle provides a unique opportunity to not only glimpse into the conflict of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo—but highlights the voices of the women grassroots activists and survivors who are working for a lasting solution to the violence.

The exhibit spotlights the essential work of grassroots women activities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in responding to sexual violence in conflict.

Led by Nobel peace laureate Leymah Gbowee, a delegation from The International Campaign Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict traveled to eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in February 2014 with award-winning photographer Pete Muller, and filmmakers Jon Bougher and Kohl Threlkeld, to capture the work of grassroots women activists. Stories were captured in Bunia (Orientale Province), Beni and surrounding area (North Kivu), Bukavu and surrounding area (South Kivu).

The exhibit is currently open to the public as part of the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict. The first meeting of its kind, the Global Summit brings together governments, officials and civil society organizations to determine action to bring an end to rape as a weapon of war. The Campaign is at the Global Summit, where members—including women activists featured in Beauty in the Middle—are pushing world leaders to prevent sexual violence, prosecute perpetrators and protect survivors.
