Global Green USA (www.globalgreen.org/millennium) recognized the tremendous advancements made in industry, building, media and public policy that move the world toward a sustainable and secure future at its annual Millennium Awards that took place on Saturday, June 7th at the Fairmont Hotel. David Crane, President & CEO of NRG Energy, was honored with the Corporate Environmental Leadership Award; Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO, & Founding Chairman of the U.S. Green Building Council was honored with the Individual Leadership Award.

Also announced during the evening was Global Green USA’s new President and CEO Les McCabe, PhD. Les joins Global Green USA from The Institute for Shipboard Education, a Charlottesville, VA based non-profit organization where he has worked since 1987, and served as President and CEO since 2006. “Having conducted a national search for the past six months, we realized that Les was uniquely positioned to lead Global Green into its next 20 years, given his experience, passion and vision for the organization,” stated Bob Bucklin, Chair of the Board of Directors. “We have deep faith in Les’ abilities to lead the organization, create robust partnerships, and an exciting future for Global Green USA.”

In addition to the exciting announcement of Les McCabe as new President and CEO, honorees David Crane and Rick Fedrizzi both gave passionate speeches about working towards a more sustainable future and the importance of bringing awareness to “green” initiatives. “California knows what it wants to be when it grows up,” said David Crane while accepting his award. “It wants to be a clean and sustainable place where its citizens can breathe clean air and bequeath a world to their kids and grandchildren that we can all be proud of.”

The Millennium Awards were established in 1996 to recognize and herald those whose lives and livelihood embody Global Green USA’s mission of “fostering a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure future.” The Awards were designed to honor individuals, companies and organizations who recognize the connection between humankind and nature, to celebrate their success and inspire others. They are presented annually in Los Angeles.

Global Green USA is dedicated to helping the people, places, and the planet in need through catalytic projects, transformative policy, and cutting-edge research. Global Green USA’s signature programs include greening affordable housing, schools, neighborhoods, and cities as well as rebuilding communities — such as New Orleans and areas of New York and New Jersey — that have suffered from the impacts of climate change, sea level rise, and environmental degradation.

Other highlights include a breathtaking acoustic performance by singer Dana Williams, followed by a few of Global Green USA biggest supporters,Ed O’Neill and Matt Wash, engaging in an entertaining and hilarious banter on stage, and British actor Peter Mensah presenting the Individual Leadership Award to Rick Fedrizzi. After dinner, guests took part in a competitive live auction where funds raised go towards Global Green USA’s long-standing initiatives.
