When CMH founder, Lysa Heslov, was exposed to the tragedy of the genocide in Sudan, she wanted to help. Her idea was to empower children in the war-torn region through the gift of art. She made kites with a group of children who beamed with rare smiles as they watched their creations soar in the air.

Moved extraordinarily by this powerful experience, Heslov’s mind turned to the disadvantaged youth in the US. Soon, Children Mending Hearts was born.

Her dream is to empower at-risk children in the United States by giving them a global education and connecting them internationally to children in need. She imagines the day when all disadvantaged youth are proud global citizens who realize their ability to effect change not only in their own lives, but also in their community and around the world.

Yesterday, Children Mending Hearts hosted its 6th annual fundraiser, “Empathy Rocks: A Spring into Summer Bash,” at a private residence in Beverly Hills, CA. Sal Masekela emceed the event and guests enjoyed performances by The Negotiators and Ava Cardoso Smith.

This year’s honorees include: Holly Robinson Peete who received the Humanitarian of the Year Award, presented by Nyambi Nyambi.

When accepting her award, Holly closed with, “I encourage you all to show a little more empathy for children with Autism.”
