Color My Life

Taking inspiration from pop art to peacock feathers and tribal liner, the eyes really did have it at this year’s fall collections. Aquilano Rimondi showed brightly hued combinations of graphic color- orange and red, green and purple, lilac and blue. Anna Sui took a nod from the 60s with matte, cobalt blue cat eyes and a tiny blue dot in the center of the lower lash line. Prabal Gurung took inspiration from birds of paradise, splashing shades of electric blue and peacock green all around the eye to give a strong exotic edge to the look. Donna Karan went for an eccentric cherry-red eye, using lipsticks over the eye lid to create a creamy texture with sheen. Mugler’s ninja-inspired look worked linear white, red and black on the inner bridge of the eye and extended past the outer corners. Miu Miu, Meadham Kirchhoff and Vivienne Westwood showed makeup as art with theatrical looks in paint-like textures creating intriguing character drama on the runway.

Smoke Hazard

The ever-evolving smoky eye is back in shades of urban grey and classic black with strong accents of pine green, midnight blue and violet femme. Rock-‘n’-roll and grunge were huge inspirations at the fall 2012 collections. Marc Jacobs and Rag & Bone showed looks that were more grunge then rock-‘n’-roll. Detail was not perfected and intensity was kept at the lash lines for that ‘I’ve done it myself’ touch. Frankie Morello was a stand out with a Black Swan meets punk rock look. Pitch black shadow created a geometric shape horizontally across the upper lid, yet left the center of the lid nude and untouched. John Galliano’s ‘Windswept Mermaid’ is a wearable favorite with a beautifully blended, dramatic smoky eye touched with iridescent emerald green on the lid. Roberto Cavalli combined pine green and violet over the classic black smoky eye with a gold highlight on the inner corner of the eye. Chanel went rhapsody in blue, rimming the eyes with glistening navy pencils. Prada had the show-stopping smoky eye. Pitch black pigment painted the eye from lash line to brow and was framed with a haze of orange cream shadow. Purple pencil lined the lower lash line to finish and frame with an almond shape; the eye was then cut through the water line with white liner, extending to make the eye appear larger.

Flash Some Lash

Continuing on with the all-about-eyes movement from runways to red carpets to, well, pretty much anywhere, major lashes are a must. With an effect to suit every mood, lashes were pumped up with layers of jet-black mascara or adorned with faux lashes from the most subtle, doll-like extensions to thick, separated clusters and neon color. Dior achieved an effortless, lady-like look with false lashes in a natural thickness and medium length. Elie Saab’s girlish pink palette was emphasized with lashes on both upper and lower lash lines, a sparse full set on top and short individuals on the lower for a doll-like feel. Threeasfour created trompe l’oeil lower lashes hand painted in gunmetal grey for a manga-like, angelic feel. Fatima Lopes created an avant garde look, pairing red lips with a subtle smoky eye finished with a thick, full set of tapering lashes, flipped and placed on the lower lash line. Colored mascara was the key to Stella McCartney’s look, a neon marine shade was applied heavily to the upper and lower lashes to open the eye. Manish Arora’s look was designed to look like graffiti and colored lights dancing on the face. Cyan blue was blended onto the inner bridge of the eye and lace-like, laser cut lashes were applied to the outer corner of the upper and lower lash line.

The New Nude

The new nude makes for the perfect canvas, allowing the clothes to do (most of) the talking. Glowing, youthful skin teamed with flushed cheeks, strong brows and messy updos made for the perfect combination of sweet and sexy.  Oscar de la Renta and Temperley London kept skin fresh with a nude eye, pretty pink cheeks and luminous highlights on top of the cheekbones. Junko Shimada added a romantic touch to the look with a splash of pink through the socket of the eye. A neutral palette is flattering for most women and is not intimidating to work with. The key to making this look effortless is keeping skin super nourished and hydrated. As Napoleon says, “Not to prime is a crime.” When skin is prepped and primed, you can get away with a more minimal base. A perfect base is essential in creating this look; keep it minimal and correct any blemishes or discoloration.
