Downtime: Savannah, GA

By Francesca Merced

If you’re looking for something traditional, yet unique to do with mom this Mothers Day, let me suggest a quick trip Down South, ya’ll, to the lovely and spectacular Savannah, GA.

Founded in 1773, Savannah was the first capital of the state of Georgia.  In addition to being the birthplace of the Girls Scouts of the USA, John Cusack fans will remember Savannah, GA as the setting for the book and the 1998 film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Savannah is in what is known as the Deep South, so be sure to pack your parasol if you’re not accustomed to intense heat and humidity. The sleepy, sensual town offers all of the modern accoutrements with a heaping helping of Southern comfort and genuine hospitality.  You can step back into time with an hour-long riverboat cruise lunch on the Georgia Queen or on a genteel carriage ride through the city.

Foodies will be inspired by Leopold’s ice cream– where you can not only devour a delicious cream cheese and olive sandwich, but where flavors like Lemon Custard and Honey Almond & Cream will melt in your mouth and cool you down.

You can also chew on Paula Deen’s “Rags to riches” story on the Paula Deen Tour.  On the tour, you’ll take in the sites of historic Savannah with some of the Southern cooking queen’s favorite haunts – including her very own restaurant The Lady and Sons.  And speaking of haunts, you can enjoy the spine-tingling scary side of Savannah by taking in one of their world-famous Scary Ghost Tours – which they say will have you literally “screaming for mama!”

For accommodations, I highly recommend a stay at one of the city’s numerous exquisite bed and breakfast inns.  One of my favorites is The Kehoe House. Nestled in Savannah’s historic district, this restored mansion offers splendid suites and guest rooms – some of which feature private sitting areas, verandas and more!

Lush, landscaped grounds and fine furnishings are both elegant and enchanting. A cooked-to-order breakfast or an Afternoon Tea is deliciously aristocratic way to spend the Mother’s Day holiday.

And, just when you think you’ve been time-warped back into the antebellum South, the inn’s lightning quick internet access will quickly remind you how thoroughly modern you are!

Even if you only have time for a long weekend stay, just moments into your leisurely getaway, you’ll see why Savannah, GA received the coveted A World’s Best City” distinction by Travel + Leisure Magazine, in July 2011.
