Tips for Breast Cancer Risk Reduction:
Choose safe cosmetics free of toxic chemicals. Read the label to avoid synthetic ingredients.
Top cosmetics to avoid:
• anti-aging creams with lactic acid, glycolic, AHA and BHA acids
• hair dyes
• liquid hand soaps with triclosan/triclocarban
• nail polish and removers with formaldehyde, DBP or toluene
• skin lighteners with hydroquinone
• heavily scented products
• moisturizers with petrolatum
• sunscreens with UV filters that mimic estrogen
• Create a healthy home by using simple, non-toxic cleaning products and avoiding the use of pesticides.
• Eat fresh or frozen vegetables instead of canned. The lining in canned food can leach chemicals like BPA.
• Eat smart with organic foods and choose hormone-free meat and dairy products.
• Cook healthier by baking or broiling your fish to cook off the natural fats and accumulated chemicals the fish may have been exposed to.
• Keep plastic containers out of the microwave. When heated, the plastic can leach chemicals into your food—go with ceramic or glass containers instead.
• Stay far away from cigarettes and smokers. Cigarette smoke has high levels of cadmium and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a source of estrogenic pollutants linked to increased risk for breast cancer.
• Protect yourself from the sun with natural sunscreens.
• Buy low emission vehicles and avoid car exhaust, which is full of carcinogens.
• Instead of using antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers, that may contain triclosan, try it the old-fashioned way and just use soap and water to stay clean and germ-free.
• Regularly go to the doctor for screenings and check-ups.
• Stay active.
