Downtime – April

Spring Break

For most people, the term “spring break” invokes images of bikini-clad coeds relaxing on a beach, or alcohol-guzzling frat boys drinking themselves silly. But why should the kids and teens get to have all the fun? After number-crunching, sales driving and starting our businesses off with a bang throughout the year’s first quarter, we hardworking, responsible adults deserve a break this time of year, too, right?

One of my favorite relaxing destinations for spring is the Napa Valley region in northern California. The weather in April and May is deliciously mild and the road trip alone is a veritable de-stressor! Just about an hour north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is home to some of California’s most popular wineries. With vast vineyards and olive trees as far as the eye can see, you’ll be hard-pressed to find to a more breathtaking landscape than this. You’ll also appreciate the warm and friendly locals. They’re a refreshing change from the rats in the rat race that we city folk are used to!

Treat yourself to a leisurely day wine tasting at the likes of Beringer, Christian Brothers and one of the area’s best-kept secrets: the family owned V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena, CA. Established in 1885, V. Sattui Winery is a treasure that stands out in a place filled with lovely restaurants, wineries and more. Among the award-winning offerings at Sattui, the off-dry Reisling is an absolute must, the delightfully fruity Gamay Rouge is among my personal favorites, and their Muscat is a 3-time Gold Medal winner. The Sattui Charcuterie and Cheese Shop are stocked with wonderful meats, breads, salads and cheeses that simply beg for a picnic, so prepare to dive in! And after you’ve eaten and drank your fill, book a stay in nearby Calistoga at a spa resort hotel, like Goldenhaven, where you’ll enjoy VIP pampering to the tune of facials, massages, mud baths, and slimming body wraps. And did I mention Calistoga’s fabulous boutiques and antique shops?

I can go on all day about the Napa Valley region, but I don’t want you to just take my word for it. Book your spring break trip today and see for yourself. You work hard all year long and put everyone else’s needs first. Don’t you think it’s time you did something for you?
